From life at home to life overseas: the adventure awaits

Male hands crossed for prayer in dark place

This post was written while we were in Chad.

You are a Christian with a vibrant relationship with Christ. You spend regular time studying His Word and with His people in an awesome church.  At the same time, you feel like God is calling you to live “somewhere else”. You’d love to serve Christ overseas… but the idea raising support scares you to death.

However, the traditional way to get overseas isn’t the only way to fulfill the Great Commission. Thanks to the internet, there are many new ways to find or create a job and earn your living. You can go anywhere Christ leads you, using the skills you have acquired, or gaining new ones while overseas.

One-man Christmas rush, Abéché-style!

Water barrel

This post was written while we were in Chad.

We didn’t have running water in the house on Tuesday and Wednesday, but were glad that the water was running from the hose outside. This allowed us to fill the barrel outside, and transport the water into the barrel in the house. Because of the water problems we are facing, I tooksink cleaned by man the catch-all off of the bathroom sink and stuffed the sewer line with toilet paper. Then I put a bucket under the sink to catch the water that goes in there. This saves us a little extra water to flush the toilet during the day.

At first, I was busy waiting at an office and preparing some paperwork. As a result, I met the man I needed to meet, two minutes before the office closed! Often, you make these sacrifices without knowing if your efforts will be worth it or not; we are always thankful when the work we put into something is useful for the task before us!

However, all that time preparing for that moment, and the time waiting at the office, was time I could have used to do some last-minute Christmas shopping. So this afternoon, I did my very best to make one final push to find Christmas presents for the girls that would be there from early morning in Christmas eve.

How to Become an Artist: The Intricate Details

Building a Business God's Way, Part 6

“[When He prepared the heavens…]

then I was at His side,

like a master workman;

and I was His delights day by day,

rejoicing before Him at every time.”

– Proverbs 8:30-31 (LITV)

When God created the world, Wisdom was the craftsman… the master workman at His side.  The structure had been laid according to His plan, and now it was time to work on the beautiful, intricate details.

In this passage, Wisdom is the “A-mown” (Hebrew אָ֫מ֥וֹן), or the apprentice, who works beside the Artist who created the Universe.

It’s the intricate details that make an artist an artist

In Elementary School, all of us quickly drew the outline of the horse and handed it to our teacher.

The artist of our class stayed in after recess, still drawing the hairs of the mane and the eyes.

God’s Gift of Boundaries

Building a Business God's Way, Lesson 5

Boundaries are meant to protect and be respected

“When He prepared the heavens, I was there;

When He set a circle on the face of the deep,

When He formed the clouds above,

When He made the strong foundations of the deep,

When He gave to the sea its limit, that the waters should not pass beyond His command;

When He decreed the foundations of the earth.”

– Proverbs 8:27-29 (LITV)

These past few weeks, I wrote about the resources God has given us, and how we should take care of them.

After giving resources to the earth, filling it with treasures and useful blessings, the next thing God did was to establish boundaries.

God’s Gift of Resources

Building a Business God's Way, Part 3

God blessed the nations with resources

Once God has helped us lay a foundation of trust, wisdom and integrity for our ministry or business, it’s time to take an inventory of what He has provided to carry out the task.

Wisdom continues His speech in Proverbs 8:

“When there were no depths, I was brought forth;

when there were no springs heavy with water.

Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth;

before He had made the earth and the fields, or the highest part of the dust of the world.”
                                                                                                              – Proverbs 8:24-26 (LITV)

After the rules of how the universe were established and put into motion, God provided natural resources for those who would live on the earth.

Why are natural resources so important?

The wealth and strength of a nation depends on its natural resources, and how they are used.  That is why every nation keeps a careful record of them.
